Abstract: This paper provides a simplified mechanical treatment for coal / rock pillar and roof in underground mining. From the cataestrophic theory, applying related equations, this paper discusses on physical mechanism of unstable coal / rock pillar, and the conditions of the unstability are also given. From such a point of riew, the obtained results will be richer than from other methods and can provides basis for mining designing.
