Spatio-temporal changes and prediction of land use and habitat quality in high-diving mining areas based on PLUS and InVEST models: a case study of Zoucheng City

Abstract: Analyzing the temporal land use changes and the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of habitat quality in mining areas, setting up multiple scenarios such as natural, economic, and sustainable development to predict land use changes, and evaluating the future evolution of habitat quality are of great significance in alleviating the contradiction between coal resource exploitation and ecological environment protection, as well as promoting the green and transformational development of mining cities. This paper takes Zoucheng City as an example, uses land use data from 1990 to 2020, couples with the PLUS model and the InVEST model to analyze the spatio-temporal change characteristics and trends of land use and habitat quality in the past 30 years, and set up multiple scenarios to predict the impact of land use change on habitat quality in 2040. The results show that: ① From 1990 to 2020, the area of forest land, grassland and unused land in Zoucheng City is generally decreasing, the water area is slightly increasing, the cultivated land is increasing due to the massive transfer of grassland. Affected by the mining of coal resources and the rapid development of cities and towns, the area of subsidence water area and construction land continues to increase. ② From 1990 to 2020, the quality of habitat in Zoucheng City shows a decreasing trend. Spatially, it is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest, and there is spatial agglomeration, which is closely related to the continuous increase of urban construction land and subsidence water area. ③ In the natural development scenario(S1), economic development scenario(S2), and sustainable development scenario(S3) in Zoucheng City in 2040, the area of cultivated land, grassland, and unused land all shows a downward trend. In 2040, the habitat quality in Zoucheng City under the three development scenarios shows a differentiated downward trend with economic development and urban expansion scale, but the expansion rate slows down in Scenario S3, which is beneficial to alleviating the downward trend of habitat quality in the study area. In the future, Zoucheng City should reasonably adjust urban planning, increase the reclamation and ecological restoration of coal mining subsidence areas, and balance economic development and ecological protection, and take the green transformation development path.
