Abstract: This paper has reviewed the progress and development tendency of environmental carrying capacity assessment in domestic and overseas.The characteristic of city environmental carrying capacity and the necessity of environmental carrying capacity assessment in coal mining cities are analyzed,and it's research work is looked ahead.It is pointed out that the environmental carrying capacity assessment based on GIS in coal mining cities is not only an important research orientation,but also the expectation of exploring and enriching and expanding of the researchers of different disciplines.
