Abstract:
Energy Return on Investment (EROI),formally proposed in 1984,has got more attention due to the slowdown of global energy production, the impact of oil price volatility and other factors.Foreign scholars have conducted in-depth research, including the estimates of EROI values of conventional fossil fuels, unconventional fossil fuels and renewable energy, while there has been little research on this topic in China. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is toprovide the reference for domestic scholars through the systematic analysis ofEROI status and trends. This paper summarizes the EROI values of conventional oil and gas, shale gas,bio-energy that estimated at home and abroad, which indicates thatthe EROI of fossil energy have downward trend and the EROI of new energy are significantly lower than that of conventional fossil energy. In the future, more efforts should be put into the EROI calculation of unconventional energy and new energy, combination of traditional energy evaluation methods and EROImethod,EROIcalculation considering environmental cost, energy consumption forecastconsidering the factors such as technological advances, andresearch on the relationship of EROI and economic development, living standards, etc.
